Student Programs






These are a comprehensive list and course descriptions for classroom presentations that are available to be taught at the various grade levels. Teachers have the option to select needed courses to be taught in their classrooms. If teachers would like a topic not listed or other presentations, please contact the School Resource Officer assigned to your school. Unless otherwise noted courses are available from either School Resource Officer.


The History of Law Enforcement: (Can be adapted to all grade levels)

    This course will cover the history and purpose for the development of law enforcement and the criminal justice system. This course also includes a brief discussion of basic crimes and awareness. The main focus on the course will cover overall history of law enforcement and a emphasis on local law enforcement. (This course is taught by Officer Correll)


NCIC Safe Kids Program: (Can be adapted to all grade levels)

    "Safe-Kids Program", is a computer crime prevention initiative of the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIC, that acquaints students with the darker side of the Internet and teaches you how to keep yourself safe while online. Armed with the knowledge and the tools, children will be safer while they're online, and know an unsafe situation when they see one.


911 Communications and Law Enforcement: (Middle and Senior High)

    This program covers the use of the 911 system, the role of 911 in public safety as well as the technological capabilities of the various computer systems used by the 911 Center. Can be geared toward different age levels to emphasize the importance of 911, reduction of crank calls, etc...

Domestic Violence, Abuse and Neglect: (Middle and Senior High)

    This program can be taught to staff or students. It covers the areas of domestic violence, Kentucky Law, victims rights and services. This will also cover the legal requirements regarding reporting suspected domestic violence, abuse and neglect. (this program is currently being taught by Officer Grigsby)


Teenagers and the Law: (Middle and Senior High)

    This program is geared toward teenagers and how the law applies to them. Various issues such as the Kentucky Juvenile Code, underage drinking and basic crimes along with the penalties are discussed. The student will develop an understanding of Kentucky's Juvenile Justice System and the role of the Court Designated Worker's Program.


Kentucky's Law Related Education Programs: (Various Grade Levels)

Community Works, Teens Crime and Community   (This program has been discontinued as a stand alone program, please click here for more information)

Recently 8 students from Pulaski County School System become among the first students in the Commonwealth of Kentucky to successfully complete the Community Works "Core 8" Program.

The Community Works program is a New initiative of the nation wide Teen, Crime and Community Program (TCC). The TCC program is a joint partnership between the National Crime Prevention Council and Street Law Inc. The Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) Office of Justice Program, US Department of Justice, support the program that began in 1985. The Program is brought to Kentucky through the Administrative Office of the Court's Law Related Education Program.

The Community Works program combines education and action in order to reduce teen crime and increase youth involvement in service to their communities. The goals of the program are to develop self esteem, leadership and citizenship skills. Pulaski County School Resource Officers, Michael Grigsby and Mike Correll of the Somerset Police Department and Court Designated Workers, Tina Morrow and Jennifer Burton taught the recent program at Pulaski Central School.

The Pulaski County School System has became one of the first school systems in the stated to offer the program to students. Community Works program is available to be taught to various youth and civic groups.


KY DRIVE SMART SAFETY CITY Program               (Discontinued)

The Safety City program, was a traffic safety program that is for Pre-school through K students and teaches them about highway safety. Student operate small tri-cycles through a 3-D mock city with various street signs, building and traffic control devices. Students learn the various means of street signs as well as how to share the road way with others. This program was presented in Spring of 2004 at Southern Elementary and Memorial Learning Center. Check out our photo gallery for pictures. Unfortunately the program as discontinued by Division of Highway, KY DRIVE SMART Program and no longer will be presented.


G.R.E.A.T. (Gang Resistance Education and Training)         (Discontinued)

The GREAT Program is being discontinued in the Pulaski County School System and will be replaced by a new program under development at this time by the SRO Program, M.I.K.E. (C) (Meaningful Interaction between Kids and Educatators.) The M.I.K.E. (C) program is being developed to target, gangs, and both prescription and illicit drug abuse in the middle school environment.


Kentucky Department of Fish & Wildlife Hunter Education Program:

This program is 10 hours in length and is taught during Academy Week at the Middle School, but can be taught at the high school level. This program will be added to the curriculum in the Student Police Academy in 2005. For more details, Click Here or on the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Link above.


Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Safe Boating Education Program

This program is 6 hours in length and is taught during Academy Week at the Middle School Level. This program is required for anyone under the age of 18 to operate a motorized watercraft in the stated of KY. Successful completion of this course will award the student with certification to operate a watercraft safely in Kentucky. This program will be added to the curriculum in the Student Police Academy in 2005.

There are other programs that are currently under development by the School Resource Officer Program, Educational Section. When these programs become available information will be posted here so check back often for the most up to date information.

Most all the above programs are taught in the Student Police Academy.
