Professional Development Courses

The School Resource Officer Program offer various Professional Development Courses to the Staff of the Pulaski County School District. These are limited to the demand for the course and the approval of the requesting school's principal.






CRITICAL INCIDENT PLANS :RESPONDING TO EMERGENCIES
To make the educational and support personnel of the Pulaski county Schools aware of the following aspects of the New Pulaski County Schools Critical Incident Response Plan (CIRP):  This will discuss the implementation of a standard district wide crisis response plan. Staff will understand the incident command system of operation and have a knowledge of their individual roles during a crisis as well as the over all district response to a crisis situation.

Drugs and Drug Paraphernalia Recognition:  (Up-dated each School Year)

Subject:  This class is a basic overview of commonly used illegal narcotics and paraphernalia. The methods of ingestion, signs and symptoms of drug use will be discussed. The class includes a power point presentation with photos of illegal drugs, commonly used paraphernalia, and drug environments. The attendees will also have the opportunity to observe actual samples of illegal drug paraphernalia from area schools. Specific training includes what to do and who to contact.  This course is 3 hours in length.  Legal definitions and penalties will be explained. The emphasis is on recognition and reporting. This course is approved for Professional Development Credit in the Pulaski County School System and is approved for 3hrs ELIA Credit for the Current Cycle


Weapons Identification & Recognition:

    This course will demonstrate the various types of weapons that are prohibited in school setting as well as methods of concealment and use. Legal definitions and penalties will be explained. The emphasis is on recognition and reporting. This course is three hours in length. This course is approved for Professional Development Credit in the Pulaski County School System and is approved for 3hrs ELIA Credit for the Current Cycle


Early Warning, Timely Response: A Guide to Safe Schools: 

    The US Department of Education and US Department of Justice, have developed the materials for this course. The purpose of the course is to present a brief summary of the research on violence prevention and intervention and crisis response in schools. It instructs school staff in what to look for-- the early warning signs that relate to violence and other troubling behaviors. The program also covers the action steps that school communities can take to prevent violence and other troubling behaviors, to intervene and get help for trouble children, and to respond to school violence when it comes up.


Teen Culture & Drug Up-Date:       

Unless children are actually observed using drugs, detection will depend on the observation of symptoms and changes in performance, attitudes and behaviors as adolescents become more involved in drugs. Teachers & Parents are in the best position to recognize early signs of drug use and frequently instinctively sense that changes are taking place in their children even before they observe any tangible evidence. This course is designed to provide information to help parents and teachers identify symptoms and indicators of drug use in recognition of the fact that the earlier a drug program is found and faced, the less difficult it will be to over come.


Gangs and Gang Identification   

This course is developed to allow the identification of various types of gangs and gang signs and graffiti. This course will be 2 hours in length and discusses history of gangs, organization and development as well as meanings found in their graffiti. The course is focused on local gangs and problems associated with them.


Environmental Safety and Awareness (formerly Titled "Clandestine Lab Safety & Awareness)

This course address personal security issues, such as Identify theft, crime prevention and victim prevention, it is taught over a two hour period, and discusses preventative measures as well as options for personal protection items. This course also include dangers faced by home visit staff, and covers dangers that may be associated with clandestine labs. This course is approved for Professional Development Credit in the Pulaski County School System and is approved for 3hrs ELIA Credit for the current Cycle


Prescription and OTC Drug Diversion and Abuse

This course addresses the issue of a growing amount of Prescription Drug and Over the Counter Abuse and diversion from legitimate sources as they may effect the school environment. Ways that students obtain drugs and unhealthy use of over the counter drugs will be discussed. The emphasis is on recognition and reporting. The types of OTC drugs and signs of their use will present the attendee with an awareness that will lead to early intervention. This course is currently pending 3 hours ELIA Credit for the Current Cycle
